Our horses are trained in England, where we have ideal conditions to build strength, stamina, and technique. Especially for the Skikj\u00f6ring discipline, where horse and skier race together over the snow, special training is required. Since we don\u2019t have frozen lakes in England, we simulate the experience by practicing with inline skates\u2014a creative and surprisingly effective way to teach the horses pulling technique, rhythm, and balance.<br \/>Beyond the physical preparation, we focus heavily on trust between horse, jockey, and skier. Nowhere else do thoroughbreds race across a frozen lake surrounded by the Engadin mountains\u2014the scenery is breathtaking, but it also demands everything from both horse and rider. The snow and ice surface changes daily, requiring exceptional sure-footedness from the horses. The altitude of 1,800 meters means thinner air, which adds another layer of challenge.<br \/>We prepare for these conditions through targeted strength and endurance training, and by using special shoes with spikes for extra grip. Still, there\u2019s always a deep respect for nature\u2014weather, temperature, and sunlight can all influence the race.
