"Precision and Passion on Ice": How do you prepare for snow and ice in green England? Liberty Stone Racing takes an unusual path. Instead of frozen lakes, they train with inline skates—a creative method to prepare horse and human for the challenge of St. Moritz. We spoke with the team about preparation, trust, and the fascination of White Turf.
How are the preparations for the White Turf going so far, and what does Liberty Stone Racing focus on during this phase?
Liberty Stone Racing: Preparations are in full swing—and they begin long before the first snow falls in St. Moritz. Our horses are trained in England, where we have ideal conditions to build strength, stamina, and technique. Especially for the Skikjöring discipline, where horse and skier race together over the snow, special training is required. Since we don’t have frozen lakes in England, we simulate the experience by practicing with inline skates—a creative and surprisingly effective way to teach the horses pulling technique, rhythm, and balance.
Beyond the physical preparation, we focus heavily on trust between horse, jockey, and skier. Only when that partnership works in perfect harmony can you succeed on ice.
What makes participating in the White Turf different from other races, and what challenges come with this unique ice event?
LSR: The White Turf is truly one of a kind. Nowhere else do thoroughbreds race across a frozen lake surrounded by the Engadin mountains—the scenery is breathtaking, but it also demands everything from both horse and rider. The snow and ice surface changes daily, requiring exceptional sure-footedness from the horses. The altitude of 1,800 meters means thinner air, which adds another layer of challenge.
We prepare for these conditions through targeted strength and endurance training, and by using special shoes with spikes for extra grip. Still, there’s always a deep respect for nature—weather, temperature, and sunlight can all influence the race. That unpredictability is what makes the White Turf so thrilling: it’s a test of instinct, skill, and teamwork.
What are Liberty Stone Racing’s goals and expectations for this year’s White Turf—both sporting and emotional?
LSR: Of course, we aim to deliver strong sporting results. But for us, the White Turf is far more than just a race—it’s a celebration of passion, precision, and courage. We want to show that dedication, hard work, and the special connection between humans and horses truly make a difference.
Emotionally, it’s an unforgettable experience every year when our horses step onto the ice and the crowd cheers along the frozen lake. It’s an honor to be part of such a storied Swiss tradition—and a testament to how creativity, like our inline Skikjöring training in England, can lead to extraordinary achievements.
